Budget Committee Chair

  • Served as TDSB Budget Chair for 3 years
  • Spearheaded the process, led the deliberations required with trustees, and board staff to deliver a balanced $3B budget with NO impact to students and schools.
  • Shrunk the deficit from $110M to 12.4M by guiding Trustees through difficult decisions.
  • Cuts did not directly impact schools as they were found in efficiencies in departments
  • Looking forward:
  • Working towards reinstating staff postions cut such as Literacy and Numeracy coaches.
  • Continuing to petition the Ministry of Education for much needed funding to address impact of poverty on students, buildings and infrastructure, inadequate funding formula for special education, etc.
  • Chair Operations and Facilities Management Committee - 2 years

    Vice-Chair Human Resources and Professional Learning Committee - 1 year

    Co-Chair Student Nutrition Advisory Committee

  • worked with Board staff and Community Partners to ensure students had nutritious foods
  • continued to provide assistance programs so that students would not be prevented from learning because they were hungry
  • offering foods in compliance with the Healthy Foods for Healthy Schools Act but that were still appealing to the students
  • Adjudicator, Expulsion Hearings and Suspension Appeals

  • long term experience in schools allowed me to understand the underlying issues and assess each situation fairly
  • these Hearings are important to the student and their families to ensure that their voices are heard
  • facilitated admission of troubled students into a
  • facilitated admission of troubled students into a Ministry mandated program for expelled students that provides them with counseling and academic supports, anger management and the ability to continue to earn credits towards graduation
  • Advocate for Parents and Community Members (Unofficial)

  • Helped parents and community members navigate the intricacies of the TDSB bureaucracy including relationships with schools, teachers and Admin Teams.

  • used my experience and Special Education qualifications to explain assessments and evaluations, School Support Team meetings, Identification, Placement and Review Committees, and much more

  • frequently attended meetings that parents have at the schools to support them with staff in schools

  • consistently engaged Superintendents in issues when the parents and Admin could not come to an agreement

  • Liaison/Facilitator (Unofficial)

  • worked with the City Councillors Ron Moesser and Paul Ainslie and others

  • met with MPPs Mitzi Hunter, Margaret Best, Minister Tracy MacCharles and others

  • worked very closely with Superintendents, Principals and Senior Staff

  • found new location for Native Learning Centre East, a specialized learning centre for Aboriginal students
  • dealt with a number of facilities issues including:
  • construction issues at William G. Miller PS

  • walkway and traffic issues

  • leaking roof at Sir Oliver Mowat CI

  • upgrades to Highcastle PS to make sure that they were ready to receive new students from Brooks Rd PS

  • responded to and resolved security issues raised by neighbours at West Rouge Jr. P.S.
